"Trilliums and Spring Beauties"

Two beautiful springtime woodland wildflowers, we’ve seen these growing together on the trail to the Blue Ledges and on the way up Hadley Mountain.  When I was young we used to call the trilliums “Stink Pots” because of their unpleasant odor.  We were told that since they blossom early before the bees are active, they smell like garbage to attract flies for pollination.  We don’t have spring beauties in our woods, but occasionally we’ve seen them in such large numbers they look like a carpet on the floor of the forest.
