Our Neck of the Woods

Our house is at the foot of little Beech Mountain and is owned by our neighbors who are kind enough to grant us use of it whenever we wish. In the panorama from this ledge at the summit Lake Forest is seen on the left and Vanare is on the right.  Lake Allure is hidden in the trees.  Potash Mountain is the unusual landform in the middle, Hadley is the long flat ridge at the horizon, and Crane is peeking out between the branches of the tree on the right.

Our neighbors take tourists on horseback trail rides up the mountain on summer evenings for a barbeque at the summit. It has also always been there whenever we need a little hike with a great reward at the top.  We’ve climbed it from all sides in every season.  For our sons’ birthday parties, a quick hike up the little mountain helped to use up some of the extra energy of the children.  Through the years our boys came to know just about every inch of Beech’s forest.  Now, even as they scramble up peaks all over the country, I’m sure there is a warm spot in their hearts for this little mountain close to home.
